Sunderland welcome Chelsea to the Stadium of Light on Sunday 8 November, with both clubs experiencing very different Premier League campaigns. The Black Cats sit bottom with five points, while fourth-placed Chelsea arrive after an impressive victory over Manchester United.

Our Sunderland vs Chelsea tips favours the visitors, whose attacking quality and longer recovery period give them an advantage. However, Sunderland beat Chelsea twice last season, so I’m taking a cautious approach to the main selection.

Sunderland vs Chelsea: Match Preview

Chelsea are favourites for Sunday’s Matchweek 10 encounter, although their defensive inconsistencies could make this a competitive contest.

Sunderland have struggled under Régis Le Bris, winning just one of their opening nine league matches. Chelsea have collected 16 points from nine fixtures, with Xabi Alonso’s side demonstrating considerably more attacking quality. The visitors also benefit from a longer preparation period, while Sunderland face Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League on Thursday.

Recent Form and Key Results

Chelsea have been much more clinical in attack, although Sunderland’s underlying numbers suggest they are creating opportunities.

Sunderland have struggled for consistency, with recent defeats against Bournemouth and Coventry City highlighting their problems at both ends. Chelsea, meanwhile, have beaten Bournemouth 5-1, Everton 2-0 and Manchester United 2-0. The recent head-to-head record favours Sunderland, however. The Black Cats won both Premier League meetings last season, securing 2-1 victories home and away. Those results offer encouragement for the hosts, although their current league form makes another upset difficult to predict.

Team News and the Main Uncertainty

Sunderland are without Habib Diarra, Dan Ballard and Romaine Mundle, limiting Le Bris’ options ahead of a demanding week. Their Europa League fixture against Dinamo Zagreb also leaves little recovery time before Chelsea’s visit. Chelsea have selection concerns of their own. Maxence Lacroix and Reece James are unavailable, while João Pedro is expected to miss out.

Jorrel Hato and Emiliano Martínez remain fitness doubts. The main uncertainty is whether Sunderland can maintain their intensity after Thursday’s European match, particularly against Chelsea’s quicker attacking players.

Tactical Analysis: Can Sunderland Trouble Chelsea?

Chelsea have scored 19 Premier League goals this season, averaging more than twice Sunderland’s attacking output. Their movement in the final third and ability to create shooting opportunities could expose a Sunderland defence that has already conceded 17 league goals. However, the hosts aren’t completely without attacking potential.

Sunderland average approximately 1.5 expected goals per match, suggesting their finishing has been a bigger problem than their chance creation. They’ve scored just once in four home league fixtures, but Chelsea’s defensive record offers some encouragement. The Blues have conceded 15 league goals and managed only two clean sheets across nine matches. I expect Sunderland to create opportunities, particularly if Chelsea leave space when pushing forward.

Nevertheless, Alonso’s side have considerably more attacking quality and should benefit from their longer recovery period. Chelsea are my preferred selection, although the draw-no-bet market offers useful protection against another difficult afternoon at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland vs Chelsea: 1X2 Betting Odds

Chelsea are favourites for Sunday’s encounter, reflecting their stronger league position and attacking performances.

Sunderland to Win13/5
Draw13/5
Chelsea to Win1/1

Chelsea to win at 49/50 is an appealing selection given their attacking quality and recent form. However, Sunderland’s two victories over Chelsea last season make the draw-no-bet market my preferred conservative option.

Sunderland vs Chelsea: Alternative Betting Odds

The alternative markets provide different ways to approach a match where Chelsea are expected to create the better chances.

Betting marketOdds
Chelsea Draw No Bet11/20
Chelsea to Win & Over 1.5 Goals7/5
Chelsea Draw No Bet at 27/50 is my preferred conservative selection. The bet wins if Chelsea take all three points, while a draw returns the stake. For a bigger return, Chelsea to Win & Over 1.5 Goals at 7/5 stands out. Chelsea have scored 19 league goals, while Sunderland’s defensive struggles and demanding schedule could give the visitors opportunities to pull clear.

Chelsea Draw No Bet

Odds 11/20

I'm backing Chelsea with the draw covered. They've got more attacking quality, a better recent league record and a much kinder schedule. Sunderland can make this awkward, especially at home, but I fancy Chelsea to have the stronger finish.

Chelsea to Win and Over 1.5 Goals

Odds 7/5

I'm going a step further. Chelsea have goals in them, Sunderland are conceding too often, and that Thursday European fixture won't help tired legs. Give me a Chelsea win with at least two goals in the match. I can see a 2-0 or 2-1 here.
