Even so, the numbers explain why I am reluctant to back the Swiss outright. They finished the campaign without a victory and concluded it with a 95-72 defeat in Türkiye. Alexander Schumacher was one of their few bright spots, scoring 23 points in Istanbul and averaging 16.0 points and 3.8 assists throughout qualifying.

There is also a significant unknown. Thibaut Petit will take charge of Switzerland for the first time and has named a preliminary 14-man squad for this window. A new coach can produce an immediate lift, especially at home, but from a betting perspective it also makes Switzerland slightly harder to assess than their recent results suggest.

Great Britain form

Great Britain were also eliminated from World Cup qualifying after finishing with a 1-5 record, although their final defeat was more encouraging than the overall result suggests. They led Iceland for more than 32 minutes and by as many as 11 points before eventually losing 88-86. It was a painful outcome, but not the performance of a team miles below the required standard.

I like the potential of this British side. The main concern is how quickly the new additions can settle during a demanding opening fixture away from home.

1. Great Britain have the greater individual quality

The gap in the FIBA rankings is meaningful, although not enormous: Great Britain are 46th in the world, while Switzerland sit 61st.

More importantly for this particular window, Britain have added Evbuomwan and Williams to a squad that already contains several experienced senior internationals.

2. Switzerland’s recent record came against much stronger opposition

I would not look at Switzerland’s 0-6 record and simply conclude that they are a poor side. Serbia and Türkiye, in particular, operate at a completely different level from the opposition awaiting them here.

Dropping back into EuroBasket pre-qualifying should give Schumacher and his team-mates far more possessions in which they can impose themselves rather than simply react to their opponents.

3. Ellis could make the difference in the backcourt

Quinn Ellis’ averages of 17.5 points and 7.0 assists per game during World Cup qualifying immediately stand out.

Switzerland’s leading scorer, Schumacher, averaged 16.0 points and 3.8 assists. If Ellis controls the tempo and Great Britain consistently get him into the paint, their attack should have more ways to create a good shot late in the clock.

4. Home court and a new coach make an aggressive handicap risky

This is where I would be cautious. Switzerland are playing at Saint-Léonard and Petit will be making his debut as head coach. Britain, meanwhile, are integrating important additions during an international window in which preparation time is naturally limited.

For me, those factors carry much more weight than the historical head-to-head record.

Great Britain are clear favourites, but the price is short

Great Britain are clear favourites at around 2/11, with Switzerland at 13/4 and the main points line set at 161.5. After removing the bookmaker margin, the market gives Britain roughly a 78% chance of winning.

Britain deserve favouritism, especially with Tosan Evbuomwan and Amari Williams in the preliminary squad, but 2/11 offers little value.

The statistical advantage belongs to Great Britain, but it should not be overstated. Their 1-5 World Cup qualifying record hardly justifies treating them as automatic winners away from home.

Switzerland’s best route to victory is to keep the game in the half court, force Britain to execute against a settled defence and rely heavily on Schumacher to create shots.

If the tempo rises and the contest opens up, I believe Britain’s greater variety of options will become increasingly important.
