Tottenham and Aston Villa are still searching for a league spark

Tottenham’s start under Roberto De Zerbi has been strange rather than simply terrible. Spurs have two points from four matches and are yet to score in the Premier League, despite averaging 12.75 shots per game and producing 3.26 xG.

They finally found the net in Tuesday’s 3-1 cup defeat at Liverpool, with Conor Gallagher scoring after De Zerbi made eight changes.

Pedro Porro is available for Villa, although Mykhailo Mudryk, Dejan Kulusevski, Wilson Odobert and Xavi Simons remained sidelined in the latest updates. James Maddison had returned to the squad but was not ready to start in midweek.

Villa’s league numbers are hardly prettier. They have taken one point from four matches, scoring once and conceding seven. Their attacking output has been modest too: 8.25 attempts, 1.50 shots on target and 3.42 xG per game.

The warning for Tottenham is that Villa have looked much sharper in cup competition. They scored three against Club Brugge before Tammy Abraham struck twice in Wednesday’s 3-1 win at Coventry.

There are also defensive concerns for Emery, with Ian Maatsen and Pau Torres picking up injuries recently, while Matty Cash and Leon Goretzka have also been dealing with fitness problems.

Why a lower-scoring game makes sense

The league finishing numbers are almost absurd. Tottenham have scored zero goals from 51 attempts, while Villa have managed one from 33. That’s one goal from 84 shots across eight combined Premier League appearances.

Tottenham are seeing plenty of the ball, averaging 59.5 per cent possession, but their control has often lacked a killer touch. The 0-0 against Everton summed it up: 14 shots and 62.3 per cent possession, yet only 0.67 xG.

Villa’s cup form means I would not go too aggressive with something like Under 1.5 goals. There is clearly more attacking quality in this side than the league numbers suggest.

Under 3.5 offers more breathing room.

Seven of the teams’ eight combined league matches have finished with three goals or fewer. Spurs have also failed to score in all four Premier League games, with Villa blanking in three of four.

The head-to-head does not change much for me. Both league meetings last season ended 2-1 to the away side, but Tottenham now have a different manager and both teams look very different going into this one. The safer read is simple: neither side has given us enough in the Premier League to expect a shootout yet.
