West Ham vs Portsmouth Prediction (Carabao Cup) Odds and Bets 08.08.2026

West Ham begin life as a Championship club with a Carabao Cup first-round tie against Portsmouth at the London Stadium. Both sides finished 18th in their respective divisions last season, although that similarity disguises a considerable gap in squad quality and depth. The hosts will need to be more clinical in attack, so a heavy win looks unlikely, but Portsmouth’s absences and defensive problems away from home make a West Ham victory my preferred selection.

West Ham form
West Ham were relegated after finishing 18th in the Premier League with 39 points from 38 matches. Their home performances were not especially strong, as they won six of their 19 league fixtures at the London Stadium and scored 30 goals. Nuno Espírito Santo’s side ended the campaign inconsistently, recording two wins, one draw and three defeats across their final six matches.
Their pre-season has been unbeaten but not entirely convincing: a 1-1 draw with Southend, a 5-0 win over Stevenage, a goalless draw against Rangers and another 1-1 draw with Magdeburg. The positive is that West Ham have conceded only twice in four matches. The main concern is their play in the final third, having scored just once across their two most recent friendlies. Tomáš Souček will be unavailable, although West Ham should still be able to field a starting eleven with considerably more top-level experience than their opponents.
Portsmouth form
Portsmouth also finished 18th last season, although they did so one division below West Ham in the Championship. Pompey recorded 14 wins, 13 draws and 19 defeats, scoring 49 goals and conceding 64. Their away figures are particularly relevant to this prediction: six victories from 23 league trips and 41 goals conceded. John Mousinho’s side did, however, finish the season positively, collecting four wins and one draw from their final six fixtures.
Their pre-season has been less encouraging. Portsmouth have played six friendlies, winning one, drawing three and losing two, with five goals scored and eight conceded. The 3-1 defeat at Wycombe was particularly concerning because all three goals followed losses of possession. A subsequent 0-0 draw with Darmstadt showed better defensive organisation, but several important players are either unavailable or carrying fitness concerns. Captain Marlon Pack and Connor Ogilvie are out after undergoing surgery, while Harvey Blair and Josh Murphy have also had injury issues.
Key factors behind my West Ham vs Portsmouth prediction
1. The difference in individual quality
West Ham’s relegation should not obscure the difference between these two squads. The London club still have players with extensive Premier League and international experience, while several members of the Portsmouth side are adapting to new roles or stepping up from a lower level.
Jarrod Bowen’s movement and ability to attack space could be particularly important.
2. Portsmouth’s problems in possession
The friendly against Wycombe highlighted the main reason I am reluctant to back Portsmouth at odds of 6.00. Pompey were not beaten solely by outstanding attacking football from their opponents. They contributed to their own downfall by repeatedly surrendering possession in dangerous areas.
That weakness could be particularly costly against West Ham. Nuno’s sides are often more comfortable attacking in transition than attempting to break down a deep, compact defence.
3. West Ham’s defensive improvement
West Ham have conceded only two goals in four pre-season matches and kept clean sheets against Stevenage and Rangers. Friendly results should not be treated in the same way as competitive fixtures, but the team’s defensive structure has looked more reliable than its attacking play.
Portsmouth have scored only five times across six summer matches and created few clear-cut opportunities against Darmstadt. Should West Ham take the lead, I would struggle to see the visitors sustaining enough attacking pressure to turn the match around.
4. Injuries and availability
West Ham will be without Souček, but Portsmouth’s absences appear more significant. Pack’s absence removes leadership and passing experience from midfield, while Ogilvie’s injury affects the balance of the defensive line.
This is also the first competitive fixture before the Championship season begins. New tactical patterns and player combinations may not yet be fully established.
5. Value in the odds
At 1.53, West Ham are clear favourites, but I do not believe the market has exaggerated the difference between the two teams. My estimated probability of a home win is around 68–70%, compared with the approximate 65% implied by the available price.
The value margin is not enormous, so I would recommend a controlled stake. I would remain interested in the home win at 1.50 or above. Below approximately 1.45, most of the value would disappear.

Portsmouth’s strong finish to last season deserves respect, but the overall figures still favour West Ham. Pompey conceded 41 goals in 23 Championship away matches, an average of 1.78 per game, and have since allowed eight goals across six friendlies. West Ham’s attack has not always operated fluently during the summer, but their defensive stability gives them a solid platform.
West Ham vs Portsmouth odds
West Ham’s price represents an implied probability of approximately 65% before the bookmaker’s margin is taken into account. I believe the hosts’ true chance of winning is slightly higher, mainly because of the difference in squad quality and Portsmouth’s injury problems. Even so, odds of 1.53 do not justify taking an excessive risk. West Ham have won only one of their four summer friendlies, and there is a realistic possibility that this tie will be tighter than the market expects.
West Ham vs Portsmouth Predictions
West Ham to win - 1.53
The hosts have a deeper squad, home advantage and a stronger defensive pre-season record, while Portsmouth arrive without several experienced players. Pompey’s tendency to lose the ball near their own penalty area is also a poor match for West Ham’s ability to attack in transition. I expect a fairly cautious opening before the hosts’ superior quality begins to tell. The main risk is West Ham’s lack of attacking fluency, particularly if Portsmouth defend very deep. I would back this selection down to approximately 1.50.
West Ham half-time/full-time - 2.45
Portsmouth conceded early against Wycombe after losing possession, while West Ham also scored quickly during their convincing win over Stevenage and took the lead inside the opening half-hour against Magdeburg. A fast start from the hosts could force Pompey to abandon their compact approach sooner than planned. The obvious danger is a tight first half, as seen in West Ham’s goalless draw with Rangers. For me, this bet retains value at 2.35 or above.
