Championship @ 01.09.2026

West Ham and Wolves meet at the London Stadium on Tuesday night in a clash between two recently relegated clubs whose starts back in the Championship could hardly have been more different. Wolves sit second with seven points from nine and nine goals scored, while West Ham are 19th and still waiting for their first league win.

If I follow my footballing instinct, that contrast matters more than the size of the clubs or home advantage. The Hammers have created enough chances to suggest an improvement could be coming, but Wolves arrive with greater confidence, sharper attacking patterns and plenty of firepower.

How West Ham and Wolves Are Shaping Up

West Ham Form

West Ham have started the Championship well below expectations: two points from three matches, with draws against Burnley and Watford and a home defeat to Charlton. The stat that best sums up their problem is the 2-1 loss to Charlton: 77.6% possession, 25 shots and nine on target… yet another defeat.

This does not look like a side incapable of creating chances. The bigger issue is that they are being punished too heavily for mistakes in both boxes. The 4-1 Carabao Cup win at Southampton showed they do carry a threat, but the defence remains a concern. Souček is still sidelined, while Pablo Felipe has returned to the bench.

Wolves Form

Wolves arrive in a completely different rhythm. They have taken seven points from nine in the league and won four of their last five competitive matches. After the 2-2 draw with Blackburn, they won 3-1 at Preston and thrashed Stoke 4-1.

The biggest danger is that their attacking threat is spread across the side. Fer López, Rodrigo Gomes, Raúl Jiménez, Adam Armstrong and Jordan James have all contributed goals. Even after conceding inside two minutes against Stoke, Wolves responded quickly and ended up taking control of the match. That tells me confidence is high.

The main concern is the injury list: Trippier, Mosquera, Rafiki Said and Bellegarde are all unavailable.

Key Factors Behind My West Ham vs Wolves Prediction

1. Wolves arrive in better form
The visitors have taken seven points from nine in the Championship, compared with West Ham’s two. More importantly for me, their performances are trending in the right direction: three straight wins in all competitions, including three goals at Preston and four against Stoke.

2. West Ham create chances but concede too much
The Hammers have scored four and conceded five in the league. Those numbers are not disastrous, but they are still without a clean sheet. The defeat to Charlton summed it up nicely: plenty of possession and chances, but costly mistakes at the other end.

3. Goals have followed both sides
Both teams have scored in all three Championship matches involving West Ham and in all three involving Wolves. Wolves’ league games have produced 13 goals already, with nine of those scored by Peixoto’s side.

That makes it hard for me to build a case around either defence shutting the game down.

4. Wolves’ absentees are the main warning sign
This is what stops me getting carried away. Wolves travel without several first-team options, including Trippier and Mosquera in defence. West Ham have a healthier squad and home advantage still carries some weight.

5. The market looks heavily influenced by home advantage
West Ham are favourites despite sitting 19th and still being winless in the league, while Wolves arrive second and unbeaten. I think the gap in the match-winner market is wider than the early-season performances justify. That is where I see the value.

Wolves stand out with nine goals in three league matches. West Ham are creating chances, but neither side has kept a clean sheet and both teams have scored in every Championship fixture involving them so far.

Recent West Ham vs Wolves Meetings

The most recent meeting ended in a 4-0 West Ham win at the London Stadium in April 2026, although Wolves had beaten the Hammers 3-0 at Molineux three months earlier. Wolves also won their 2025 League Cup meeting 3-2.

I would not put too much weight on that head-to-head record. Both clubs have since dropped into the Championship and Wolves are now working under César Peixoto, so current form and tactical direction matter far more to me than those previous meetings.

West Ham look too short for what they have shown so far. I see more value on Wolves, especially with the draw covered as well.

Wolves or Draw

Odds 4/5

The Analyst: I’m siding with Wolves without needing them to win. They’re scoring freely, they’re unbeaten in the league and right now I trust their attacking structure more than West Ham’s defence. The absentees are the obvious danger, so covering the draw is exactly how I want to play this one.

Wolves to Win

Odds 27/10

The Value Hunter: I’m happy to push it further. West Ham are being priced on reputation and home advantage; Wolves are giving me the form. Nine league goals, seven points and confidence running through the side — at this price, I’d rather be with the visitors than against them.
