Julián Álvarez responds to future speculation amid Barcelona and Arsenal interest

The Argentine forward has once again stopped short of guaranteeing his long-term stay at the Metropolitano despite being under contract until 2030

Julián Álvarez found himself under the media spotlight ahead of the Champions League semi-final between Atlético Madrid and Arsenal, where the conversation frequently veered away from the pitch and toward his long-term future in the Spanish capital.

While the 26-year-old is tied to the club for another four years, his refusal to issue a definitive pledge of loyalty has alerted several of Europe’s heavyweights with Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Arsenal all reportedly monitoring the situation.

Addressing the flurry of reports that surface weekly, Álvarez insisted that he is shielding himself from the “whirlwind of lies” often found on social media to preserve his focus for the final stretch of the 2025/26 campaign.

“I try not to give it much importance,” he said. “I can’t keep coming out to clarify or deny things all the time. I don’t pay much attention to what’s posted on social media because it often turns into a whirlwind of lies.

“That’s why I don’t waste energy on it; I save it for the things that matter to me and for what I can do to help the team.”

A pattern of ambiguity fuels Barcelona’s summer interest

This non-committal stance appears to be part of a consistent narrative for the forward, who has faced similar questioning throughout the season.

In previous remarks with L’Equipe, Álvarez appeared to leave his future open to interpretation, a stance that has left the Atlético board with some big concerns heading into the summer transfer window.

When asked previously if he would remain at Atleti, his response was viewed by many as a tactical opening for interested parties.

Barcelona, who are on the verge of clinching the LaLiga title, have reportedly taken these words as a green light to explore a potential deal that would add significant strength to their front line.

While the Argentine remains the Catalans’ most-wanted player with Robert Lewandowski looking likely to leave the club in the summer, their financial troubles makes a move challenging, although that has done little to silence the rumours around Álvarez.

“Do I plan on playing at Barcelona or at PSG? Honestly, I don’t know,” he told L’Equipe. “I see what people say on social media… in Spain, people speak a lot about me and Barcelona. For now, I am focused on Atlético and we will review at the end of the season.”
