What Happens Next in Manchester City’s Premier League Appeal?

Manchester City’s appeal has turned English football’s biggest legal story into a waiting game. The club is challenging the independent Commission’s findings. Now the questions are what punishment could follow, when it could arrive and whether it can affect this season.
What exactly has Manchester City appealed?
The Premier League confirmed on 2 October that City had lodged an appeal with the Chair of the Judicial Panel. The club is challenging the Commission’s core findings after being found guilty of serious financial-rule breaches across the 2009/10 to 2017/18 period, plus three of four alleged breaches concerning co-operation with the League’s investigation.
The Commission found arrangements that inflated revenue and reduced costs by more than £900 million. City reject the findings and say the decision contains material errors. The case has also had a major impact on the Manchester City relegation odds, with uncertainty over the final sanction driving interest in the market.
The appeal will be heard by a three-person Appeal Board. Proceedings are private, and the Board can uphold, overturn or vary the Commission’s decision.
This disciplinary case, and this decision, are the most significant in Premier League history.”: Richard Masters
When will the Manchester City appeal be decided?
There is a timetable, but no guaranteed public date.
Under the Premier League’s newer fast-track rules, an appeal hearing should take place within 12 weeks of being lodged, with a decision due within 30 days of the hearing ending. That creates a possible route towards an outcome around January 2027.
That is a working window, not a promise. January is plausible, but no final date has been announced.
| Stage | Position |
|---|---|
| Appeal lodged | 1 October 2026 |
| Appeal hearing | Private |
| Decision | No fixed public date |
| Sanction | Still to be determined |
Could Man City get a points deduction or be relegated?
A points deduction, relegation and expulsion are not interchangeable.
The Premier League says the Commission has broad sanctioning powers, including fines, points deductions and other sporting sanctions. It has not announced a number.
Claims about 50 or 60 points are outside estimates, not an official punishment. Until the sanction process is completed, nobody can responsibly state how many points City will lose, or that relegation is certain.
What do the Manchester City betting odds say?
The legal case has created noise, but the football market still prices City like an elite side.

What happens while the appeal is ongoing?
City continue playing as normal unless and until a sporting sanction is imposed. The appeal does not itself remove points, relegate the club or change a match result.
The key distinction is between the finding and the punishment. City are appealing the finding, while the sanction stage is separate. The story can therefore move through more than one legal step before supporters know the practical effect on the league table.
For bettors, uncertainty is not the same thing as value. A headline can make a market look tempting without making the probability clearer.
