A high-profile Iberian clash as both sides vie for a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup. Spain and Portugal, Portugal and Spain. Neighbours, serious title contenders, continental footballing powerhouses and rivals in this fixture, which is by no means new, having already faced each other at South Africa 2010 and Russia 2018. Around 5,000 million people are set to watch on television what is undoubtedly the most exciting clash of the round of 16 at this World Cup.

In our preview of Portugal v Spain, you’ll find a much more detailed analysis of the match, including line-ups, key players and more.

The Spanish are buoyed by the positive impression left by Luis de la Fuente’s side against Austria (3–0) and are drawing on the precedent set at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, when Vicente del Bosque’s team faced Portugal in the round of 16 and David Villa’s goal secured Spain’s place in the quarter-finals. Portugal, for their part, suffered immensely against a strong Croatia side (2–1); Roberto Martínez knows he must address several issues, but they take heart from the most recent encounter between the two sides: the final of the last Europa League, which went the Portuguese way.

It is a match that will test the mettle of two top-tier footballing powers brimming with highly talented players. Lamine Yamal, Mikel Oyarzabal, Pedri and Rodri are the stars of the Spanish side. At 41, Cristiano Ronaldo remains the be-all and end-all of a Portuguese side that boasts world-class players in their respective positions, such as Nuno Mendes and Vitinha.

Both sides have plenty of reasons to believe they can not only win this tie, but also be crowned champions on 19 July in New York. Both teams know each other well; they are aware of their opponent’s strengths and weaknesses, and it would be very surprising if either side managed to secure a clear victory over the other. It is therefore by no means far-fetched to think that this clash could be decided in extra time or even on penalties.
