FIFA World Cup 2026, 04:00 @ 03.07.2026

It’s time to turn our attention to one of the most evenly matched Round of 32 fixtures at the 2026 World Cup. On one side is Switzerland, who have looked solid so far, topping Group B; on the other is Algeria, who, although they have recorded significantly worse results than their European opponents, have shown flashes of quality football. Vancouver will be the venue where two different styles of football clash: one characterised by control and dominance, the other by a faster, more direct approach. Who will secure their place in the round of 16?

We invite you to read more in our preview of Switzerland v Algeria, where you’ll find the likely line-ups for the match and the key factors shaping the game.

Murat Yakin continues to successfully lead the Swiss side in major tournaments. In this World Cup, they began with a surprise draw against Qatar (an undeserved own goal in the 94th minute), but subsequently proved solid and dominant against Bosnia and one of the hosts, Canada. Their play is underpinned by a strong midfield featuring Xhaka and Freuler, who are capable of reading the game and understanding its dynamics. Up front, players such as Ndoye, Vargas and Embolo have the ability to raise the tempo and create the winning move. They have no star players but tend to be effective and make few mistakes, which is why they start as favourites in this group.

Opposite them will be a much more free-flowing side. Pektovic’s team’s approach to securing victory involves less control over possession and overwhelming the opposition in waves. They aim to win the ball back and break quickly through the likes of Mahrez, Maza, Chabi and Gouri. That wasn’t enough against Messi’s Argentina (Leo scored a hat-trick), but it was enough to overcome a resilient Jordan (2–1) and come close to victory against Austria (an own goal by Kalajdzic in the 96th minute made it 3–3). They are quite unpredictable, and that is precisely what could give them a chance of progressing.

The script for the match seems set: a Switzerland side controlling the game and an Algeria side which, without sitting deep, will try to time their pressing well to launch quick counter-attacks after winning the ball back. However, the defensive frailties of the centre-back pairing of Bensebaini and Mandi, and of Luca Zidane himself in goal, suggest it will be very difficult to shut out Embolo and his teammates. The Algerians have conceded seven goals in three matches at this World Cup and, even without facing a sublime Messi, they could have done considerably better. That’s why we’re backing a Swiss victory after 90 minutes: they’ve reached the round of 16 in the last three World Cups and shouldn’t fail to do so in this edition either.
