Britain’s surprise Wimbledon story continues as Arthur Fery carries the nation’s hopes into the third round against Belgium’s Zizou Bergs at SW19

Arthur Fery is Britain’s last remaining singles player at Wimbledon 2026 after a series of early exits for the home contingent. The 23-year-old wildcard now carries British hopes into a third-round match on Saturday, July 4, against Belgium’s Zizou Bergs after beating Damir Džumhur and Otto Virtanen in his first two matches at the All England Club.

Fery’s run has been one of the unexpected stories of the tournament. Raised in Wimbledon, educated nearby and developed through the American college system at Stanford University, he has reached the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career. Now, with the home crowd behind him, he has the chance to extend a dream week at SW19.

Who is Arthur Fery?

Arthur Fery is a French-British tennis player who was born in Sèvres, France, on July 12, 2002, and represents Great Britain. He came through a very different route from many young professionals, spending time in college tennis at Stanford University before pushing on full-time on the professional tour.

Tennis is very much part of his family background. His mother, Olivia Féry, was a professional tennis player who appeared in the women’s doubles draw at Roland Garros in 1991 and later represented Hong Kong in the Fed Cup. His father, Loïc Féry, is a French businessman and president of FC Lorient.

Fery also has deep Wimbledon links. He attended King’s College School in Wimbledon and has grown up close to the All England Club, making this run feel even more personal. The ATP notes that he enrolled at Stanford in 2020, became a two-time ITA All-American and was ranked No. 1 nationally in college singles in 2022.

Why is Arthur Fery Britain’s last player left?

Fery became Britain’s final singles hope after several home players exited during the opening rounds. Fery was the last British player standing after Katie Swan, Jacob Fearnley and Jan Choinski were knocked out.

His route has been impressive. In the first round, he beat Damir Džumhur 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1. In the second round, he came from a set down to defeat Finland’s Otto Virtanen 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-3, 6-3 on Court 18.

Fery had to manage pressure, the home atmosphere and a powerful opponent, but he faced just one break point against Virtanen and converted three of his own. That composure has helped turn him from a British wildcard into one of the stories of the Championships.

Arthur Fery’s Wimbledon record

Before this year, Fery’s best Wimbledon singles result was the second round in 2025. Fery made his Grand Slam main-draw debut at Wimbledon in 2023, when he lost in the first round to Daniil Medvedev. He then received Wimbledon wildcards again in 2024 and 2025, with his first tour-level win coming at Wimbledon 2025 against Alexei Popyrin.

His 2026 run is therefore already the best Grand Slam performance of his career. Arthur Fery is certainly not among the favourites to win Wimbledon 2026, but by beating Džumhur and Virtanen, he has gone one round further than ever before and given British fans a surprise home player to follow into the second week conversation.

Arthur Fery vs Zizou Bergs preview

Fery’s next opponent is Zizou Bergs, the Belgian world No. 37. Bergs will start as favourite because of his ranking and greater experience at ATP level. He has been a regular presence higher up the tour than Fery and will be expected to use his serve and aggressive baseline game to dictate rallies.

But Fery has reasons to believe. He has already beaten two higher-ranked opponents at this Wimbledon, he is comfortable on grass, and he has the benefit of a home crowd that has quickly adopted him as Britain’s final hope. If he serves well and keeps points varied, he can make the match uncomfortable for Bergs.

The key will be whether Fery can protect his serve as effectively as he did against Virtanen. If he keeps the scoreboard pressure on Bergs and turns the match into a tight, emotional contest, the crowd could become a major factor.

Arthur Fery Wimbledon odds

Fery is the underdog against Bergs, but not a huge outsider. The current odds place Bergs at 4/6 and Fery at 6/5 in the match betting market, although odds can change quickly before play begins.

Bergs has the higher ranking and stronger tour pedigree, but Fery has momentum, home advantage and proven grass-court form this summer. The market sees Bergs as favourite, but it also gives Fery a realistic chance of reaching the fourth round.

For those looking beyond the straight match winner, markets such as Fery to win a set, over total games or the match to go four or five sets may appeal more than backing him outright. His first two matches have shown that he can battle through difficult periods, and another close contest would not be a surprise.
