Group H is one of the most wide-open groups heading into this final matchday, as no positions have yet been decided. Spain have already secured their place in the next round, but could finish first, second or even third depending on the results.

For their part, Uruguay are with their backs against the wall and cannot afford to lose to Spain if they are to stay in the tournament. In fact, they may even need a win.

Meanwhile, Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia will face off in a match that, in effect, acts as a knockout tie. The winner will progress to the round of 32.

Cape Verde has been one of the surprises of the tournament

Cape Verde arrived at this World Cup as a complete unknown to much of the public. It was their first appearance at a World Cup and few of us expected them to compete at the level they have shown.

However, the African side has managed to draw with both Spain and Uruguay, going into this final matchday with their qualification in their own hands.

They’ve certainly had a bit of luck in both matches, especially against Spain, as well as putting in a great defensive performance. But the points are there, and they now have a fantastic opportunity to complete the upset.

Against the Spanish, they set up a very deep defensive block that managed to stifle De la Fuente’s side. Against Uruguay, however, they were somewhat more ambitious and found spaces to spread out in attack. The defensive block wasn’t quite as deep, and the team spread out more in attack. They also capitalised on two very serious errors by the Uruguayans to secure a 2–2 draw that could be worth its weight in gold.

Saudi Arabia must win

Saudi Arabia managed to snatch a point in their opening match against Uruguay, but were left reeling after the heavy defeat suffered against Spain.

They go into this final match with just one point and a goal difference of -4, a situation that makes the maths very simple: only a win will see them through to the next round. A draw would see them automatically eliminated.

The Saudi side have not made a good impression. Against Uruguay, they capitalised on a poor first half from the South Americans to take the lead, but came close to losing the match in the second half. And against Spain, many of their defensive weaknesses were laid bare.

Prediction: Cape Verde vs. Saudi Arabia

Sports betting markets have Cape Verde as slight favourites, though not by much. We’re most likely to see a fairly even match.

Precisely for that reason, I don’t find the winner market particularly appealing. I have a better feeling about Cape Verde, but it seems the match could be decided by small details and clinical finishing in the penalty areas.

Where I do see an interesting opportunity is in the goals market.

The fact that Saudi Arabia need nothing less than a win changes the approach to the match considerably. A draw is absolutely no good to them, so any situation where the scores are level in the closing stages will force the Saudis to take risks.

For example, a 1–1 scoreline in the final twenty minutes would turn the match into a back-and-forth affair that would favour those looking for goals. Saudi Arabia would have to push forward and leave spaces, whilst Cape Verde would find opportunities to break through and seal the win.

Furthermore, I don’t expect Cape Verde to adopt such a conservative approach as they did against Spain. Facing an opponent of a similar calibre, and with no certainty that a draw will be enough, it seems logical to expect a slightly more ambitious approach.

For all these reasons, I expect a more open match than it might appear at first glance. Saudi Arabia’s need to qualify and the defensive frailties of both teams could lead to a match with more chances and more goals than the current odds suggest.
